The most interesting
project is, surely, that one tied to the “Evolution” line.
In 1991 rises in me the need to have a very particular instrument, dictated
by the insatisfaction of the instruments I used in that particular period.
My main guitar, with which I usually played, was a GIBON LES PAUL CUSTOM
1980, an excellent instrument which I liked very much for its sound
and playability, but, the fact of getting back home with an aching shoulder
after having rehearsed or after concerts, pushed me into buying a FENDER
STRATOCASTER , which, with all respects tied to its sound and its high
fluting name, I promptly modified substituting the pickups and some
other details. After a brief period of adjustment, my feeling of insatisfaction
very soon came back. One day, whilst in the countryside preparing a
barbecue of fish, I went to a dried up tree to cut off a branch, the
saw was well sharpened and I was beginning to feel hungry, so I started
cutting. After about ten minutes my wife called me telling me to hurry
up; the branch was quite large and I was not able to cut it so I used
other wood and dried shrubs to light the fire. After a few days I went
back to that same place taking with me an axe, a new blade and a chainsaw;
I cut off the branch with difficulty and immediately realised that the
wood was very compact, it looked much like marble. In that moment the
idea to make the neck of a guitar jumped to my mind. I went back home
and showed my father that little trunk asking him of what essence it
was made of and after having consulted one of his friends, an authentic
expert carpenter, they told me that it was red mulberry: They were both
struck by its compact vein and the carpenter asked me where the tree
was because he absolutely wanted that wood. Looking at his expression
I immediately understood that I was before a really unique timber, so
I told him lie saying that the tree was not on my property. The next
day I went back, on my own, to the property and with my chainsaw cut
down the tree. After about a year of hard work came to being the NUMBER
ONE.
It played great, I had made it enirely of mulberry timber, using practically
only that hard wood with exception of the fingerboard, which was in
ebony. During the phases of construction I had to sharpen the utensils
continuously, but that timber was wonderful! After having played it
myself and having it tried by various musicians like Fabrizio Bianco,
Rocco Zifarelli and Nico Di Palo, I decided to study a normal evolution
of that prototype.
After ten years of studying, comparing, trying and talking to various
musicians and after other constructions of other models of the same
line, I achieved making the guitar of my dreams i.e. the Evolution Antonio
Masiello. I sold the stratocaster even if it still played well, I kept
the Les Paul but, unfortunately I don’t play it because it isn’t
as good as my Evolution.
LINE OF PRODUCTION “EVOLUTION”
Solid body guitars with tonal chambers
The instruments of the “Evolution” line of production have
in common some particularities which are represented by the evolution
of the first model made between 1992 and 1993. The points in common
are:
HIGHLY FIGURED TIMBERS, WELL SEASONED WITH ACOUSTIC CHARACTERISTICS
FOR A GOOD TRANSMISSION OF THE SOUND WAVES THROUGH THE TIMBER FIBRES;
ERGONOMIC FORM WHICH IS SHOWN AND DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE CUSTOMER
SO THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE THE FORM DESIRED;
THE PRESENZE OF TONAL CHAMBERS WITHIN THE BODY GENERALLY MADE WITH TWO
OR THREE ESSENCES;
A PARTICULAR JOINT OF CONJUNCTION BETWEEN NECK-BODY CALLED
DOVETAIL IN A LONGITUDINAL SENSE AND THE GLUEING OF THE PARTS TOGETHER
WITH AN ALIPHATIC RESIN ;
THE POSTERIOR PART OF THE NECK IS FINISHED WITH TUNG OIL AND HAS AN
ASYMMETRIC PROFILE IN ORDER TO GIVE LESS TENSION TO THE LEFT ARM AND
HAND MUSCLES;
A CHOICE OF THE BRIDGE AND PICKUPS WITH TOTAL PROTECTION AND EARTHING
OF THE WHOLE ELECTRIC CIRCUIT AND OF THE INSTRUMENT;
FINISHING OFF WITH SHINNING NITROCELLULOSE VARNISH “LAWRENCE MAC
FADDEN” SPECIFIC FOR GIUTARS, USED ON HIGH LEVEL INSTRUMENTS (BOB
BENEDETTO JAZZ GIUTARS).
THE INSTRUMENTS ARE ENTIRELY HAND MADE.
